<description>Climate change is accelerating changing weather patterns that are causing forest fires to break out across Europe. But in Portugal higher temperatures are compounded with landscapes of eucalyptus plantations, making giant fires the summertime norm. The planting of non-native monocultures to feed the pulp industry has had devastating consequences for farmers, foresters and the general public alike. In January 2026, Fern campaigner, Siim Kuresoo visited Portugal and found that it is so much more than a land of terrible forest fires, it is also a country where communities are taking matters into their own hands and restoring forests naturally. This video highlights their testimonies, including explanations of the support they need to change Portugal’s forests for the better. The EU has a clear role to play as it thinks through how to fund forestry that aligns with the Union’s sustainability objectives and supports rural communities to achieve long-term, sustainable livelihoods.
